Santa Clara has a long history of generating Olympic athletes and representing the United States in the worldwide exhibition of excellence and sportsmanship. With a particularly heavy emphasis on competitive racing and synchronized swimmers, Santa Clara has produced more than 50 Olympian athletes over the years and is proud to be an integral part of fielding U.S. athletic teams that compete on the world stage.

Santa Clara Swim Club

The Santa Clara Swim Club, headquartered at its world renowned training facility on Patricia Drive in Santa Clara, was founded by George Haines in 1951, and has consistently been regarded as the premiere swim club and training center for competitive swimming in the world. Providing both training for amateur and competitive athletes as well as swimming lessons and age-group competitive swimming for children and teens, Santa Clara Swim Club has been a force in the South Bay’s communities and an integral part of the development of athletics and the competitive spirit in Santa Clara.

The Santa Clara Swim Club has helped generate over 51 Olympic medals for USA swimming and has fielded over 40 swimmers in various Olympic Games. With more Olympic medals under their belt than any other swim club in the world, it is no surprise that athletes from around the globe come to the center for training or that local spectators at their meets feel a proprietary sense of pride.

Champions Both in and Out of the Pool

Carrying on the tradition of George Haines, the single most highly regarded competitive swimming coach in the history of the sport, Santa Clara Swim Club is committed to developing champions both in and out of the pool. Discipline, hard work, ethical conduct, and sportsmanship are stressed in all aspects of their athletes’ lives and at all ages of competition. Rare enough in any sport or field of study, Santa Clarans are proud of this unusual commitment to individual purpose and are extraordinarily proud of the accomplishments and drive of their local Santa Clara Swim Club.

Notable Names

More so than any other institution in the sport of swimming, Santa Clara Swim Club’s roster of alumni reads like a who’s-who of the swimming world. Many of the household names in swimming (even amongst those who have never followed the sport) have competed for and trained with the Santa Clara Swim Club.

Swimmers such as Pablo Morales, Donna de Varona, Chris Von Saltza, Don Schollander, and the legendary Mark Spitz have represented the Santa Clara Swim Club and the City of Santa Clara with distinction over the years.
