When it comes to outdoor activities in general, Santa Clara fits the mold for the San Francisco Bay Area’s well-deserved reputation as an active group of communities. Visitors are often surprised at the wide variety of choices in golf courses they have available to them within such close proximity to the business and entertainment centers of Santa Clara. We’ll bet that even if you are a local or a longtime resident there are a few courses near Santa Clara that you haven’t had a chance to play.

If you are looking for golfing supplies and gear, Santa Clara has a wide variety of pro shops and golf outlets to choose from. Everything from the larger retailers who frequently have sale items like the Sports Authority and Big 5, to the more golf-centric specialty shops like US Golf Shop and Citi Golf can be found within easy reach of the downtown areas and close to any number of nearby courses.

Most of the courses listed below are near downtown Santa Clara and make getting to and from the course an easy proposition so that you don’t need to spend valuable time in transit.

Pruneridge Golf Club – This public course is centrally located to downtown Santa Clara and offers golfers a 9 hole course along with comprehensive training and practice facilities. A double-decker driving range, putting/chipping greens, and a professional training staff can help get your game in better shape or help you warm up for a round. “Visual Golf” technologies are also available here for more effective diagnostic and swing improvement.

Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club – This municipal course offers golfers a full 18 hole course in the heart of Silicon Valley. Operated by American Golf Corporation, this is an impressively well-maintained course and a locals’ favorite. With more than 50 bunkers and several water hazards over the course, this can be a bit more challenging than some of the other options available.

Deep Cliffs Golf Course – Known as one of the most playable and hospitable public courses in the area and the finest 18 hole executive course in the Bay Area, Deep Cliff is an inviting and well-kept course that is extremely accessible. With many regular community tournament s and events such as a ladies’ group, tri-tip dinner event, and a putting contest, Deep Cliff inspires golfers to become regulars at the course. They also offer special deals and pricing online.

Sunken Gardens Municipal Golf Course – Sunken Gardens boasts a 9 hole municipal course that has been open and serving Bay Area golfers since 1955. With low greens fees and an approachable course layout, this can be the perfect spot for a casual game with friends or if you have a limited amount of time while you’re in town. They also offer a full driving range with 18 stalls, nighttime hours, and clubs if necessary.

Blackberry Farm Golf Course – This municipal course is a low par 9 hole course that is another local South Bay favorite. Set right along the edge of Stevens Creek, the course forces players to focus on accuracy when shooting and offers challenging holes over its relatively short duration. Offering rainy day coupons and semi-annual and annual memberships for discounted rounds, this is a moderately priced course.
